Welcome to East Oahu Twelve miles east of downtown Honolulu is the community of Hawaii Kai which was developed by Henry Kaiser in the late 1950s and 60s to be a self-sustained community with its own golf course, movie theater, library, retail, restaurants, parks and schools. Hawaii Kai, extending deep into Kalama Valley and includes the affluent area of Portlock, offers upscale high-rises, ridge homes, gated communities, ocean frontage homes, marina-front residences and townhouse living on the island of Koko Isle. It is also home to the original Roy’s restaurant, Sandy Beach and breathtaking Hanauma Bay which offers some of the best snorkeling on Oahu. A safe, upscale neighborhood, Hawaii Kai appeals to retirees, families and boat owners. You can find someone walking or riding a bike on the streets of Hawaii Kai anytime during the day.

Fun Facts

  • Hawaii Kai developer Henry Kaiser once envisioned a minor league baseball team for the area, and that games would be played “in a 50,000-seat stadium in Hawaii Kai.”
  • Hawaii Kai is a very prestigious community, home to several great golf courses.

Living in East Oahu

Some even travel by boat when they make a run to Costco or dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants around Koko Marina, Hawaii Kai Towne Center or Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. A healthy lifestyle in Hawaii Kai is further evidenced by its offering of several farmers’ markets including the People’s Open Market in the Park & Ride and the Hawaii Kai Farmers’ Market at Koko Head Elementary School, both on Saturdays, and the popular Farmer’s Market held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday behind Panda’s Express in the Hawaii Kai Towne Center.

For those looking to challenge themselves, the Koko Head Crater Trail offers a breathtaking 360 degree view of East Oahu. Hawaii Kai also is a pet-friendly neighborhood with a dog park located on Keahole Street across the street from the Hawaii Kai Towne Center. The park is opened daily so dogs can run, play, exercise and socialize with other dogs, and even stay hydrated at the doggy water fountain.
