Make 2017 the Year You Conquer Your “Get Fit” New Year’s Resolution

Make 2017 the Year You Conquer Your “Get Fit” New Year’s Resolution Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a great resolution but one that can be challenging to uphold. And, unfortunately, by the time this month is over, 70% of you who vowed to work out more this year will have likely already failed at doing so. This is especially true if you’re prone to “gym burn-out.” The good news is that Oahu offers plenty of fun ways to get in shape without having to spend hours on the treadmill. By adding a little variety to your work out regime, and making sure it’s as fun as it is beneficial, you’ll be more likely to stick to it.

Here are some ways to help you conquer your “get fit” resolution through January and beyond.

Take a Yoga Hike
Hiking yoga combines two completely different exercises to create a fun and scenic workout. Yoga helps hikers feel more limber and aligned when they hike, while hiking gives yogis the cardio they miss out on with a traditional mat practice. It’s a win-win. Plus, you can’t beat the views.

Apply a Holistic Approach
If you’re not familiar with Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis, you’re probably not alone. Gyrotonic is a holistic workout that combines yoga, ballet and Pilates-type machines, and is designed to improve strength and flexibility through rhythmic and harmonious movement. Now is a great time to try it out as it’s growing in popularity on Oahu.  The island is lucky enough to have several studios offering up classes, including Gyrotonic HonoluluBody Balance and Power Pilates Plus.

Enlist in a Boot Camp
Boot camps have been around for several years and are still a popular choice.  With a variety of exercises in an indoor or outdoor environment, workouts are tough but never boring.  Plus, they’re effective at burning calories and building muscle.  Programs like Egan’s Fit Body Bootcamp in Honolulu, Kailua and Aiea and Hi Life Athletics in Honolulu will get you in shape and looking good in that bikini or speedo that’s currently tucked away in your dresser drawer.

Join the CrossFit Revolution
Possibly one of the toughest workouts around is CrossFit. Combining aerobic exercise, gymnastics, and Olympic weight lifting, it has exploded in popularity and several gyms have popped up around Oahu, including CrossFit Oahu. Not sure if CrossFit is for you? Stop by any CrossFit Oahu on Saturdays at 10am for a free intro session.

Open Your Door
One of the best parts of living on Oahu is the outdoor recreation available just outside your door. Run along the the Ala Wai Canal, Kayak From Lanikai Beach to the Mokulua Islands, Hike the Koko Crater Railway Trail or hit the surf for snorkeling, surfing or SUP fun.

No matter how you decide to get in shape this New Year, there’s certainly no shortage of fun and effective workouts on Oahu. Try a few things, see what works for you and you just might find that 2017 is the year that your resolution sticks.
